Oil Leak Repair – August 2017
Subsea Global Solutions Halifax received an emergency call recently that a ferry in a remote part of Northeastern Canada was experiencing an oil leak in the port stern tube. Our crew was quickly assembled and dispatched to the vessel to diagnose and repair the cause of the leak.
Due to the heavy traffic load at the height of tourist season, the ferry schedule could not be interrupted – and as such, all works were to be completed at night while the ferry wasn’t running. Subsea Global Solutions dive technicians completed an initial inspection of the ferry, and removed previously installed sealing material to gain access to the port forward fairwater ahead of the strut. After further removal of the fairwater, the source of the oil leak was found – a degraded weld in five locations, between the stern tube and port bearing.
Subsea Global Solutions Class A certified wet welders were on site to complete the permanent repair to the attending surveyor’s satisfaction. Further inspection confirmed that the leak was repaired. An intermediate in-water survey was completed, revealing weld fractures in the rudder. These fractures were completely removed using carbon arc gouging techniques and the affected area was welded wet with Subsea Global Solutions’ Class A class approved procedures and coded welder / Divers; returning the area to as built strength.
